For those that know me, you know how much I love party planning. I love designing all the decor elements, and working around a theme to bring everything to life. But, more than that, I love family and friends gathered for a festive and memorable occassion. I guess a first birthday celebration isn’t also only about the bub, but also about us parents! It was a whole year of us being parents to our special Kayla Jane, and we wanted to celebrate it with all our loved ones.
I CAN’T BELIEVE KJ IS ALREADY ONE!
To celebrate this big milestone, Bruce and I decided on a big party around the theme “WILD ONE”. We felt like this suited our KJ so much, as she really is the life of a party – and, like her father (slightly more so than me); she is wild, adventurous, brave and free in spirit. While I absolutely loved putting together a Pinterest board for idea’s, I soon realised that this theme is one of the hardest last minute themes, and will require DIY. The only thing I could find in the party shops were some triangle tribal paper cups/plates, and lots of feathers. The rest was all up to me! WILD ONE is also quite a broad theme, and so we decided to go with more of a boho-forest-powpow-wild, rather than a wild-jungle-animal-wild.
Some of our DIY consisted of:
- Using hoola-hoops, wool and feathers to make big hanging dream catchers
- Cutting the tops off of party cups, and adding sticks in to make little teepee tents
- Using ice cream sticks on watermelon triangles and donuts (and it’s a much easier way to serve and eat!)
- Lots of personalised label designing and sticking
We kept with the colours turquoise, pink and orange (inline with the invitation). The fox and raccoon were our special WILD characters, and the exact fox designed on her invitation was also made for the top of her cake.
We also decided to invite most of our friends and family, and so we realised that this party will most definitely not just be chips, candy floss and party packs. We needed to entertain the adults too, but not forget about the babies & kids. So, Bruce ensured that the adults would be satisfied with a Gin Bar & a Draft Beer Van. Oh, and let’s not forget the beer pong. It’s just a pity that I wasn’t able to taste the delicious Gin Bar or the Red Rock Draft beers, being seven months pregnant. For the bubs, we set up a full area of soft play with a big ball pit and toddler jumping castle, turquoise and pink bean bags, and a sweet table. For lunch we had chicken prego’s, and the rest of the snacks were either healthy dips, fruits, or delicious sweets and cakes. The jelly segments (photo below) were such a hit with the kids, and so I’ll have to share a recipe soon.
The only thing I really regret is not hiring a professional photographer. I think it would’ve been an incredible opportunity for us to take some beautiful family photo’s, and I wouldn’t have had to worry about snapping (in between spending time with everyone) some photo’s to remember the day. So, a note to my future self – get a photographer! We go through all the effort, have all our loved ones in one place, and celebrations like these are what life is truly about.
I did manage to get a few photo’s though, and so I have shared some of the decor pictures below.
Thank you to those that celebrated with us, and spoilt our little Kayla Jane. Thank you for being on this incredible journey with us, and for all the support, love and fun over the last year. My little KJ, Happy Birthday our beautiful girl. You have made our lives magical, adventurous and WILD. Because of you, our days are the happiest they have ever been. We love watching you grow into the adventurous, kind, loving and loud little girl that you are.
BE BRAVE, LITTLE ONE. DREAM BIG!
Love Ash x
